I am writing a review only to mention that there are four squash courts at the YMCA and a healthy squash circuit. For squash lovers in the DC area there are--alas--very few options. Although the squash facilities are hardly excellent, it is the presence of a strong group of squash players that makes this a great choice for the squash enthusiast.
Although not as nice as newer YMCAs recently built in suburban areas, this facility delivers the more value than any other gym in the city. Amenities include an indoor pool, indoor basketball courts, racquetball, an indoor track (though small), laundry service, climbing wall, day care, and much more not found in most city gyms.
That the facility is run by a not-for-profit organization is evident--some of the equipment is dated and the interior is in need of renovation. The free weight section seems more an afterthought as it occupies very little of the square footage available in this enormous edifice. The weights are also aged and mismatched. Lockers are dated, metallic cages about one-third the size of those found elsewhere (they won't accommodate larger items like some gym bags).
Despite its shortcomings, this YMCA's amenities are unmatched by any other health club here in the business district for under $100 per month. It's no surprise that Washingtonian magazine rated it as the area's "Best Variety" among fitness facilities.
