The fitness team should at least try to model health and fitness in appearance and demeanor, especially the group exercise instructors. It may help to stop recycling the same instructors (some claim they have been teaching of 10+ years at the same gym) and freshen up the tired old acts. Heck, if I was teaching for 10+ years I would at least try to have the body to prove it! Bally Group Exercise, it is time for an upgrade!

This is my favorite Bally's in DC, simply because it is a no hassle, no frills kind of place. There are fancier, more fashionable and higher profile places, but you definitely pay for that. The staff and regulars here are just real people, and don't bother you if you don't want to be bothered. It does get crowded after work like other places, but I can always find a way to work in my routines. There's not a lot of attitude and posing going on--just a normal gym for all kinds of people. It is also a very diverse crowd, which fits the downtown and working crowd.

Improving...

Excellent spinning courses, trainers and new the Kukuwa dance class. Pilates leaves much to be desired, due to its dull content and equally dull, robotic instructor.

Too busy hitting on the women
The gym is ridiculous. No one is friendly at all. The personal trainers are too busy trying to hit on you it's ridiculous. One of the trainers is on a womens haters site for cheating. I could imagine why. The Towson location and the Rt. 40 location are dirty and disgusting. There are no personality at all. Bally's just want your money and leave you astray with the wolves (meaning the staff). Bally's is a sess pool, and I would never recommend no one to go there at all. I suggest you keep your money, and go to another gym.

Classes that count
Vivian and Shawn are excellent instructors who explain what the steps are for those just starting out to those who are regulars. I enjoyed spin as well as pilates. Both were very well instructed and executed. I like instructors who actually do what they are asking you to do! Thanks!

Customer service, please?

The Monday & Wednesday cycling experience was the most positive experience, led by a patient and responsive instructor who made the demading activity enjoyable!

For newcomers to the Tuesday Bosu Bootcamp, it feels as if one is being initiated into a Girls Club.  The "regulars" position themselves in the front of the class and very demonstratively catupult themselves into recognition (which I find extremely distracting) with the support of the instructor.

Similarly, the Thursday Pilates class is not recommended for beginners, as there is very little guidance.  The instructor has as much personality as a pet rock and is condescending and abusive in her delivery of  instructions, for example:   "suck in your gut" or "use your abs (muscle) instead of your big thighs...."

Look Elsewhere

Like most others gyms in the business district here in Washington, Ballys is located in a basement void of natural light. While other facilities overcome this deficiency through the use of artificial light, Ballys makes no such effort. The gym is poorly illuminated, giving the first impression of a dungeon. Be sure to bring your flashlight if you visit.

The sales representative to whom I spoke was friendly, but unusually aggressive about signing me up for a membership. He phoned me twice after I had left the gym to harass me about joining Ballys. Perhaps Ballys' incentive plan for sales representatives needs to be toned down.

The rate structure for Ballys is so confusing that it seems devious and, in fact, it is. Perform a search online for Bally Total Fitness and you'll see myriad complaints related to billing issues. I'd love to explain their rate structure in detail here, but I am limited by a maximum word limit, the number of hours in the day, and my own ability to comprehend it (and I'm an electrical/nuclear engineer!).

There are other similar gyms in the area that you can join without hassle, so don't waste your time with this Ballys.
