I went years ago and yes it wasn't that great, but now its newer, cleaner and everyone is very helpful and classes are great. The showers are new as of this summer.
This is a medium sized club with a large club price. The small basketball court is a plus, as is the fairly new exercise circuit. But over the past year, Healthtrax has cut back on many of the programs that made this club worthwhile. The locker rooms are not maintained well, especially during the weekends, and as a result, there are often little flying bugs on the shower walls. About half of the showers don't completely shut off. My husband says the same problems exist in the men's locker room. Staff turnover is higher than I've seen in most healthclubs and too many of those who are there tend to treat members as interruptions to their own web surfing, reading magazines and talking among themselves. There is only one fitness instructor who appears to have much knowledge about fitness. A big turnoff is watching employees standing at the doors outside smoking. The swimming pool is nice, except it is keep very cold during weekends. As with most clubs, this is busiest in the morning. It's generally pretty empty the rest of the day and night. In my year and a half as a member there, I have not come across many families with children.
The bottom line with Healthtrax is that if you can create your own exercise program, shower at home and don't need much interaction with the staff, this can be a very nice place. If you are looking for a club that offers a lot of programs and rely on the staff for tips and friendly advice, there are many better clubs on the South Shore at more reasonable prices.
