Gold's Greenbrier is a really nice clean gym with lots of equipment. My husband and I took advantage of a one-week free trial period, primarily because Gold's offered his company a reduced rate of $32 a month. My only complaint in working out there is that staff members didn't seem readily available if you have a question, nor were they overly friendly. The contract/signing period was were things got really messy.
During that trial period the price went from $32 to 37, and we were offered a very special and top secret "2 free months" to bring the price down to $32 p/p the first year - but it would increase back to $37 after our initial period was up. I was not happy about that, but was told that its the best they could do. After carefully reviewing the two contracts Gold's offers and highlighting all of the special provisions or what I like to call loopholes Gold's made for themselves, we made an appointment to discuss signing with a salesman. Although I'm sure they're all not as tranparent or phony as the person we dealt with, you can forget having an intelligent conversation that results in informative and honest answers. We were run in circles for an hour, and I lost my temper on more than one occassion because I simply could not get a straight forward answer to anything I asked. I'd ask about price increases, he'd start off on a tangent about all the health benefits of paying "x" number of dollars. I finally asked him to put certain oral guarantees in writing and he stated they couldn't write on the contract, nor could he strike any wording from the contract. That's funny, because the back of the contract states that a Gold's employee and member can agree to anything as long as its in writing. He did tell me that he'd get his manager to personally promise me that rates wouldn't increase, and that we could in fact go month to month if we paid the first year up front. From someone who has plenty of experience with contracts, words are meaningless and I tried to explain that to him. He thought I was getting "too caught up in the contract wording" The final straw was when he gave us our contracts and rather than giving us 1 year with a delayed billing of 2 months he signed us up for 1 yr and 2 months - extending our contract to 14 months. In the end, we were still paying 12 months at $37. Where was the deal? When I pointed it out and explained why it was wrong, he refused to change it. He felt he'd givin me his best offer, had gone out of his way to give us that top secret deal, and simply didn't know how to nor would he ask his manager how to change the contract dates. We refused to sign, and ended up walking out. The salesman did give us free vouchers to come back and work out for a day, but he stated we wouldn't get any sort of deal and would have to pay the same rates as everyone else. After that, I refuse to go back no matter how much I liked the facility itself. The people stink, their business ethics stink.
We now belong to the YMCA. It's not as big, nor does it have all the equipment. Its sometimes really busy and you have to wait for equipment, but overall its a great environment and we didn't have to put up with a ton of BS to sign and can leave by just giving 30 days notice. Just think long and hard
